What Is A Wart?

Introduction to a Wart

A wart is blister like formation. It is small in size, looks like a cauliflower or a protrusion and is a rough tumor that can be found on hands and feet. Wart is a common infection caused due to virus. The Human Papilloma Virus or HPV is the main cause of this infection. Wart can be contagious, if you come in contact with the skin of an infection person. Even the use of towels, clothes etc of a wart infected person can cause this disease. A wart infection usually disappears after some months. However, this infection can even last for years and has higher chances of relapse. Some HPVs can also cause cervical cancer.

Types of Wart

There are different types of wart. The type of wart infection usually depends on the shape and the area affected. But besides this, the type of wart infection depends much on the type of human papilloma virus involved. The different types of wart are:
  • Common wart (Verruca vulgaris): Found most commonly on hands and knees, this is a raised wart with roughened exterior.
  • Flat wart (Verruca plana): Found most commonly on areas such as face, neck, hands, wrists, and knees, this is a small, smooth, and flattened wart. Usually occurs in big numbers and is tan or flesh colored.
  • Filiform or digitate wart: Found most commonly on the region of the face, and more specifically around the eyelids and lips, this is a thread or finger-like wart.
  • Plantar wart (verruca, Verruca pedis): Found most commonly on the pressure points of the soles on the feet, this is a hard and rather painful wart. It appears with several black dots in the center.
  • Mosaic wart: Found most commonly on the hands and soles areas, this wart appears as a group of very closely bound plantar.
  • Donkey wart (venereal wart, Condyloma acuminatum, Verruca acuminata): Found most commonly around the genital areas (vagina, penis, and rectum), this wart appears in clusters or individually as well.

What Causes Wart?

Wart can be really bothersome. Some wart infections can bleed and cause much pain when they are broken or bumped. Caused by HPV family, a wart can be caused by any of the more than 100 types of human papilloma viruses! They can infect any part of your body include genitals, inside of the mouth and hands and soles of your feet.

Wart can be embarrassing, but effective treatments are available that decrease the spread of wart infection.
